Sexual Problems ·
Sexual problems can affect anyone and often occur at times when you’re experiencing stress. Finding out you are HIV positive can have a significant impact on many areas of your life and in some cases can result in loss of sexual drive or desire.
Some men with HIV find difficulty in getting or keeping an erection. Erection and ejaculation problems are not unusual and can be caused by your HIV making you feel unsexy or anxious about sex. Getting older is another factor. However, erection and ejaculation problems can be caused or made worse by HIV or HIV drugs damaging the nerves in the penis that control an erection. Other drugs such as anti-depressants can do this too.
Lower than normal testosterone levels have been found in some men with advanced HIV infection and it’s worthwhile getting your testosterone levels measured.
Treatments such as testosterone replacement therapy or drugs like Viagra and Cialis are used to treat these sexual problems. You should consult your doctor if you are experiencing sexual difficulties, as some treatments should not be taken with some anti-HIV drugs or need a reduced dose. Poppers should not be used if you are using impotence treatments like Viagra or Cialis.
