Men living with HIV

Getting Support ·

Getting the right support for yourself is essential.

Your clinic has a team of trained individuals able to give various kinds of support.

Depending on where you live, there may be support groups and organisations available to help. Ask your clinic for details.

To find your nearest service, visit www.hiv-wakeup.org.uk and enter the first part of your post-code [or check out the Directory section of this site].

“Having someone to talk to can be really helpful – someone you trust for immediate support and professional support for anonymity. Remember though, once you have told someone, you can’t take it back.” – Leo

Friends, family or partners can help if you are having a bad day. Remember that your HIV status might come as a shock to them. Think carefully about who you speak to. Timing is essential.

“Two days after I was first diagnosed positive, I remember telling a very good friend of mine and she collapsed. I remember thinking ‘That’ll be the support then. For her not me!’” – David
