How will it affect us? ·
You may find that you or your partner have negative reactions to each other at first:
- because you are positive and they blame you
- because you are positive and they feel guilt
- because you are negative and they feel resentment
- because you are negative and they want to protect you.
Or you may find positive effects: if you are negative, their relief may demonstrate their love for you; if you are both HIV-positive you can be supportive of one another.
Every relationship is different. The effect of an HIV-positive diagnosis will depend on the type of relationship you had before the diagnosis. There is nothing to say that a relationship has to end as a result of a positive diagnosis, but similarly there is nothing to say that you must stay with a partner just because he or both of you were diagnosed positive.
The key is to keep talking and let each other know how you are feeling and seek support if and when you need it.
