Who do I tell? ·

If you are considering discussing your partner’s HIV status with anyone, ideally you should talk to them first to check that they are okay about it.

Once you have told someone about your partner’s HIV status, you can’t take it back and there is no way to control what that person will do with the information or how they will react to the news.

You may find the person you tell does not react as you would have hoped, therefore you and/or your partner need to be sure you/they are able to deal with the reaction you/they receive. Take time to consider who you and your partner want to tell and always make sure your partner is happy for you to do this.

Think about how you would feel if the roles were reversed or, if you are HIV positive, how you reacted when you first found out your status. Everybody is different and you have to go at a pace that suits your partner – don’t try to force him into doing something he doesn’t feel ready for, even if you think it would help.
